Who’s next to try and hack the PS3? Earlier this year many people believed the PS3 was only a Blu-Ray drive and memory access away from being able to play back-ups, but now, it’s back to the drawing board. The PS3 can’t be hacked!…yet.

After releasing a PS3 exploit to the world earlier this year, the hacker by the name of “Geo Hotz” has decided to call it quits just short of completing the PS3 hack. TQcast reported earlier this year, during Geo’s announcement to the world, that it will be years away before we see any PS3 back up games, which proves the strength of the PS3’s firewall.

While it would be stupid to think that Geo is the only person in the world with the ability and dedication to hack the PS3, the task does not appear to be simple or cheap. Many others like Geo are hard at work every day to accomplish what has yet to be accomplished on the most powerful gaming console in the planet.

Geo may have cost us Linux on the PS3, but stability and reliability is far more important now a days.

The look on Sony PS3 employees right now – ‘Priceless’.

Let’ just hope this isn’t a fake announcement by Geo that would lead to this:
“In other news..Geo fakes his retirement, to avoid blame on the PS3’ long awaited hack.”
For those wondering how robust the PlayStation 3 Video Editor is, I have created a short Bayonetta clip video, using a 4 minute clip, and breaking it down to 1:27 using custom music, text, cut transitions, and speed up and slow down functions using only the PlayStation 3 Video Editor. check it out.

Keep in mind that the video editor is very simple, and does not compare to Sony Vegas, Final cut, or even iMovie, but a very nice feature none-the-less. Check out the amount of cuts, text, and speed transitions I added for this project.

I started with a blank project and a 4 minute Bayonetta clip.

*(note)The video editor only detects video clips that were added to your PS3 after firmware update 3.40.

This is what the speed transition additions look like on the video editor.

This what the Text addition and edit looks like in the video editor.

The initial video clip was 4 minutes, it got chopped down to 1:27 with added text, music, speed effects, and cut transitions.

The final file was 21mb. The video clip didn’t appear to lose any quality during the rendering. I uploaded directly to Youtube using the PS3. Even in Youtube, it specifies that it was uploaded with ‘PS3 TM’.

The biggest complaint with the PS3 video editor has to be the movement of the text or speed slide bars, they tend to go pass the place you want your bars to land in. Also, the lack of multiple music tracks for one video was disappointing.

None-the-less it is a fun feature to have on the PS3.

On to the next one.

Let me know what you think.

The Microsoft Applied Sciences Group is working on a new 3-D technology that will dismiss the need of any glasses what so ever. This new technology will use cameras to track viewers’ eyes with special lenses that control lighting.

Looks like Microsoft is not ditching 3-D what so ever, they are thinking past the annoying expensive glasses. Hope this technology takes off. Currently, the technology only allows 2 people to view 3-D at one time.

With 3-D Blu-Rays and 3-D video games preparing to make their way into homes, what health risks can we face with this technology?

3D has been around for quite some time now, but never publicly marketed the way it is today and never enhanced the way it is with today’s technology. Health issues may have never surfaced due to the minimal amount of 3-D content available to the public until today. But just like everything else in the planet, it is bound to affect you right?

It is the year 2010, 3-D will make its mark in gaming and movies this year and many will go out and purchase a new state of the art 3-D ready TV without even considering health issues.

Wyoming News reported that many Eye Doctors argue that repeatedly asking our eyes and brains to go against their normal function has short-term effects. This can cause long-term effect on small children whose vision systems are still in development.

Others have different theories, such as Dr. Dan Perala from ‘A New Concept Optical’. Perala states that the worst-case scenario with 3-D is some irritation or tired eyes. The sensation is similar to the adjustment that comes with a new set of eyeglasses.

Perala also stated, that he hasn’t heard any concerns or questions from patients, but that could change as more 3-D movies come out and move people line up to see them.

Eye Doctors now a day may not have answers just yet. 3-D is just starting to hit homes, and perhaps that is the reason why it never developed in to anything bigger in the past. We alter our vision every day, whether you wear sunglasses or prescription glasses, the eyes are always busy. Many people report that they get headaches from watching just one movie in 3-D. Now, just imagine playing a few hours a day of video games in 3-D?

Let’s just hope that vision cases due to 3-D movies or games don’t start surfacing to the public anytime soon; because if they do, the 3-D technology may never take off the way it was intended.

Not long ago Sony wisely removed the “Install Other OS” option from the PS3’s list of features and like clockwork many dissenting opinions were thrust upon the gaming community. Class action lawsuits fueled by hacker’s protest and lunacy dominated headlines. Yet there was one uncomplicated question that could have ended all this: Why do you need to install another operating system on your PS3?

Sure the answers would be entertaining but the truth is nobody needed to. But perhaps Sony’s reasons for removing such a feature were not just safeguarding. What if an operating system was deemed no longer necessary because of a new option?

Enter Google TV. If you were living in an alcove under a cliff somewhere, perhaps you do not know what Google TV is. Imagine turning on your PS3 along with your television and being able to watch anything you could think of. Sounds impossible right? Not with Google TV. It aggregates media from the Internet, your cable, and any other video source it can tap into. So watching your favorite show becomes as simple as pressing a button on your controller and saying, “LOST” into your Bluetooth headset or perhaps the PS3 Eye’s microphone picks up the request.

Google TV would then search for the show LOST on all available and connected sources. It would bring up all links in Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, or on your cable lineup. You could choose to stream from the Internet or schedule the program on your DVR. Regardless, you get the media when you wanted and how you wanted.

Perhaps you’re asking why this article focuses solely on the PS3 when Microsoft aggressively promotes digital content. There are several reasons:

1) Sony is a hardware company. Microsoft is not. Sony will alter their televisions (tentatively called Internet TVs) and Blu-Ray players (PS3 hopefully) to work with the Google TV software. Microsoft would have to contract a company to make their Google TV devices just like they did with their HD DVD drives. They refuse to do so for Blu-Ray so why take the chance with something new?

2) Sony already has devices out in Europe, Australia, and Asia that could be altered to support Google TV. The Torne and PlayTV already have inputs to receive your cable and convert your PS3 into a DVR. It would seem that adding Google TV even as a secondary programming would not require much tinkering.

3) Even if both companies made add-ons or built hardware into the console which would allow Google TV to work natively, how many people would purchase the Xbox 360 version over the PS3 with added Blu-Ray capabilities? Let’s not forget Microsoft’s hardware reliability issues with the Xbox 360 would factor in a lot of educated consumer’s decisions. It simply makes more sense to buy the most reliable option with the most features which means the PS3 is the better choice.

4) While Microsoft might be happy to include another feature on their consoles, they will not be inclined to do the mobile Android OS any favors. Microsoft is making a big push to reinvent their mobile operating system and Windows Mobile 7 devices will not control Google TV but Android phones will.

That said, even though Sony is a partner in this “League of Aggregation,” adding Google TV to the PS3 might not be in the future. However, it would solve issues that PS3 owners have concerning Flash support. Think of the streaming capabilities and Android apps on your PSP or the PSPGo which can be tethered to your cell phone. Not to mention there’s still no PS3 DVR devices for the United States, Canada, or Mexico. Sony could make a lot of money by implementing Google TV in their devices and at the same time give the PS3 that final push to leapfrog Microsoft’s beloved Xbox 360.

I was recently given the opportunity to review the new Flip Slide HD by Cisco. And let me tell you I was both impressed and unimpressed by the device in more ways than one.

So lets start with the look and feel of the camera first. The camera comes in a nice looking package. And when you open the box all you see is the 3” screen that is the new feature for the Slide. The screen itself is very sleek but when taking it out of the box you notice that this camera is basically all plastic casing. Looks more like a toy than an actual camera.

This video camera is really simple to use. Once you hit the power button on the side of the camera , your controls show up on the 3“camera. The controls are the same as they are on the Ultra and the Mino. Nothing has changed except that there are no buttons and everything is touch screen. I found the touch screen to be easy to use. To record you touch the record button and also to stop it. Then to view you touch the arrow and scroll till you find the video you want to watch and hit the play button. Nothing to it. This is where things get a little tricky. When deleting footage you have to select the one you want to delete and then touch the trash can icon. That’s when the camera asks you if you want to delete the file but instead of just being able to touch yes to highlight it you still have to touch the arrow button highlight the yes and then hit the play button. Really inconvenient when having a touch screen where you can just highlight the yes which is what you want to do every time you delete a file.

Now it’s time for the new and improved part of the Flip Slide which is the 3” screen. The screen is able to slide out (hence where they got the name Slide from) so that it sits at a 45 degree angle for viewing. This allows it to sit on any level surface in order to view what you have recorded. Once you slide the screen open the images come up and you can scroll through them by touching the screen which is extra sensitive so you may end up picking footage you don’t want. Or you can use the scroll bar to navigate though your files. This however is a little tricky because it zooms too fast and at times pass the footage you want to see. Once you have finally picked the video all you have to do is tap on the screen and it automatically starts playing to stop the video just tap the screen again or just slide the screen back into position.

Well now that we are done with the functionality of the device. Let me get into the quality of the video. The Flip SlideHD shoots video at 720p just like the MinoHD and UltraHD cams. The only difference is the 16GB of internal memory which is good for up to 4 hours of footage. As far as the quality well if you shoot video outside where there is plenty of light you should have no problem with quality. The picture is very crisp and the colors very bright. When shooting in low light it may be a good idea to carry extra lighting… but who want to carry around extra light when your on the go right? The quality of the picture becomes a little washed out in low light. But the detail is still pretty good for a pocket cam. When shooting indoors you may also want to turn on as many lights as possible.

As far as the sound quality I was really impressed. I tested the sound quality by recording someone playing an electric guitar. The Slide does not pick up any static and the sound coming from the Amp is as clear as day maybe even better than it is live. Usually when using any other kind of device to record sound it picks up the electrical static. There is no better way to test the sound quality than with the sound of an electric guitar.

Action shots are really what this camera is all about right? Being able to whip it out and take a quick shot of people laughing or kids running around being silly. Here is where we get into the camera being unstable which combined with motion blur makes it really hard to get a perfect picture. If you have it on a tripod or sitting on a stable place it works great. Once you have it in your hands the screen is a bit shaky and if you move to fast from point A to point B everything seems to blur together. Also fast movements like someone running or jumping also give off a little motion blur. Which is ok because sometimes you can’t even really see it. There are some mini tripods that you can buy to help with stability, some as low as $10.

The SlideHD runs for about 279.99, while the MinoHD is 229.99 and the UltraHD is 199.99. Now is it really worth the price? I think if the Slide actually came with the accessories that are sold separately at ridiculous prices. For example, if the camera came with the HDMI cable and maybe even the power adapter it may be a better deal. At $280 you can go to a hand held HD camcorder and get better footage with image stabilization. Another thing that Flip could have incorporated to the Slide is some sort of still mode. Some new features to the device would have been nice but they stayed with the same functions as the UltraHD and MinoHD. I believe that Flip could have tried to implement this screen in a thinner device. The device is about 30% thicker than the MinoHD and a bit heavier. I understand that by adding the slide out screen they had to make it thicker but maybe the design could have been taken to another level so that it wouldn’t be that much thicker and still be able to carry it in your pocket comfortably.

One thing that I liked were the touch screen controls. An advantage that I saw with this is that with button controls they tend to stick or get sand, dirt or liquids and eventually won’t work correctly. They will start to stick or even break. With the touch screen buttons there is no possibilities of that happening and the device should last longer this way. At first the touch controls are a little tricky but nothing you can’t get used to.

All in all, the SlideHD is a really nice camera, even though there are a few things Cisco could have done to make it better. I believe that anyone that has never used a Flip camera will be impressed by this little devise but for those of us that are spoiled by the high quality look and feel of the MinoHD this camera will not seem as slick. I would really like to see what the next step for Cisco’s Flip lineup will be. Hopefully something with a little more style and better software than just the same old software they have used.

Pros:
3” touch screen for viewing
Clear sound quality
16GB of internal memory
Sharp 720p video
Easy to use controls
FlipShare software

Cons:
Does not shoot 1080p video
Much larger than the MinoHD or other pocket cams
The price is not comparable to other pocket cams
Does not include a HDMI cable
No new features like still mode or electronic stabilization
No SD card slot
Motion blur

3 out of 5 Michelas

What is the big deal of 1ms? 1ms gives you the most accurate possible experience the video game developers and film creators intended to deliver, by responding faster to everything seen on the screen. Ghosting, or blurring is almost obsolete with a 1ms LCD. But let’s not forget, this LCD is also packs 100,000;1 contrast ratio, meaning rich colors, and accurate whites and blacks. Perfect for video game and movie (Blu-ray, HD) enthusiast.

Cheaper. Faster. More Convenient. These are all things promised with the advent of digital distribution. But well after the heralded arrival of iTunes, the Xbox Live Video Marketplace, and the PlayStation Network Video Store, consumers are still left feeling uncertain. While a small minority adapt to the perceived future of gaming and media at current prices, more budget conscious people stick to the cable box or Satellite dish despite tempered chagrin.

One should always heed new technology as experimental. Just Google “Red Ring” for proof of that. Hardware concerns–whether we recognize it or not– acutely affect digital distribution. When servers are down, you can’t access streaming services like ONLIVE or Netflix. Hard drive space despite cheaper prices is still a problem. The PS3 already has a resolution for this with the ability to read and write to external hard drives, USB thumb drives, and for older units, SD cards. Recently Microsoft has decided to let gamers to officially use external sources for storage. Perhaps a 1TB external hard drive will be enough space for videos, games, pictures, and themes over the life span of a console. Barring any hard drive crashes or server failures, the convenience of downloading or streaming media is indeed great.

Amassing large amounts of media online usually faster…unless you’re using the PSN with a 6Mbps or sluggish connection. A gamer usually can get a game from a local retailer in about the same time. When downloading bigger games like Gran Turismo Prologue 5 or Burnout Paradise, that becomes questionable on all platforms. Smaller titles like Sony’s Minis, PSOne Classics, Arcade games, and older digital games don’t suffer as much only because of their size. With the ISPs, Google, and the FCC pushing for faster broadband speeds, maybe this problem will eventually fade away.

Premium pricing is one quandary that digital distribution has yet to conquer and a reasonable remedy is nowhere in sight. Buying HD movies on the PSN Video Store usually runs $19.99 which is marginally cheaper than the physical copy which often includes both the Blu-Ray and DVD copies. Even when considering purchasing television shows, you will end up spending $1.99 for standard definition or $2.99 HD per episode. So buying Season 5 of Lost in HD ends up costing $50.83 plus tax, but Amazon.com has the Blu-Ray set for just $34.99 with free shipping. Why should shoppers squander $50.83 on one season of one show when cable / satellite offers a lot more for about the same price?

Convenient. Yes. Faster. Sometimes. Cheaper. Not by a long shot. After accounting for the costs of retaining an Internet connection, even the term “reasonable costs” becomes ludicrous. With more people affirming digital content, ISPs are raising prices and introducing more usage restrictions. Digital distribution is indeed a perilous slippery slope. It reduces the sources you can buy media from and in fact, destroys the very idea of competitive pricing. Amazon.com, Walmart, and other companies battling for your bucks are left completely out of the equation. Is hampering the success of global retailers really worth the luxury or is all this digital distribution talk just a reflection of society’s lethargy?

Let’s first off give it up to Engadget for finally realizing they had an iPhone 4G photo for months now. After many rumors surfaced the net, it was clear, that someone knew something, the question is always “is it true?”. Well today, Engadget has put the pieces to the puzzle together, and have pretty much unveiled the new iPhone 4G.

The things we do know about the iPhone 4G according to Engadget’s sources, are the following:
- Higher res screen on-board,
- A front-facing camera,
- A higher resolution camera with flash
- Supports MicroSIM cards

I think the best feature about the new iPhone, is the manly look. latest iPhones were looking too feminine. Welcomes back, Fat look. And check out the detachable battery, umm, smells like Verizon was here.

Just when you thought the PSPgo didn’t have a chance in these times of convenient, small, and sexy looking handhelds; Hairo a Japanese peripheral maker announces an attachable LCD screen that will turn your PS3 Slim, into a PS3Slimgo. The LCD screen supports up to 720p resolution. No word on how it will be powered, but we are guessing with some sort of battery pack. And we hope for some short cables, or a cable management kit to go with it. The LCD screen attachment will be available in Japan this May for $275. No word on when it will hit Europe or the States .

Even after the defeat of HD-DVD, Microsoft didn’t show any interest in adopting Blu-Ray what so ever. Some say it was due to pride, while others state it was due to the money and the mind set Microsoft had set for the future. While Sony is doing incredibly well recently, Blu-Ray without a doubt has been a great feature for the PS3. Sony doesn’t have to worry about size limits when it comes to PS3 games just yet. But eventually even Blu-Ray will need an upgrade–which could be exactly what Microsoft foresees. Below are 5 reasons why Microsoft’s next system may not be a game console, but an interface.

5. Xbox LIVE- Microsoft has already started a proving axiom for Xbox Live–”everywhere”, so why not continue to provide the live experience without having a console. Xbox LIVE, much like the internet, would be a portal to a virtual world. Take the new Windows 7 phone for instance–Xbox Live will be integrated on the phone. While Microsoft has stated that games will be available, it is still unclear exactly what the gaming potentials will be.

4. Zune video on Xbox LIVE- Microsoft’s 1080p HD movie streaming via Zune Video has been providing Xbox LIVE members with an easy way to stream high def 1080p movies without a disc. Another hint that physical media is not a priority for Microsoft.

3. Xbox Games On Demand- Xbox’s Games on Demand have already been a hit for Microsoft, so why not continue on this trend by providing games on any Xbox Live enabled device.

2. Blu-Ray- Let’s face it, Microsoft will not give in, and will not ever release a Blu-Ray capable gaming console, so what other options does Microsoft have? Please see number one (below) for the answer.

1. OnLive - Recent OnLive press conference videos have proved that OnLive has tons of potential. Why wouldn’t Microsoft have interest in the idea–or even work together somehow to bring an identical experience to the gamer without a console? Heck, Microsoft is no stranger to intercepting ideas–and calling off all disc enabled consoles in exchange for an interface device much like that of OnLive’s with low latency video, would be exactly what Xbox Live could have in store.

Although many are anticipating a new Microsoft gaming console that supports larger capacity discs, that console may never come. Microsoft seems to be dedicated and focused on downloadable content that would be readily available for streaming or download to any Xbox live enabled device or interface.

The great “Geo Hotz” who initially hacked the very first iPhone to work on all service carriers, is now making front page news once again. This time Mr. Geo makes news, by exploding the PS3’s hardware and software, in which he described as a “very secure system”. Today he has released the PS3’s exploit to the world. The exploit would give full memory access and therefore ring 0 access from OtherOS. What exactly does that mean? Who the heck knows, but how can you not have faith in the guy.

But, seriously how many people have the knowledge, money and team to pull this off right now? Geo has set the ground work, so all that’s left to do, is the baking, and of course the icing on the cake. But that is easier said than done. Let’s go back sometime when the PS2 initially got hacked. You first needed a chip with 20-25 solder points, then of course came the boot disc, then the game, then the praying that it booted up fine. All this back in 2000 was great, but we still paid the price and ran the risk to brick the system. Eventually a safer, quicker, but most importantly, an easier solution came about.

Now, if the PS3 happens to successfully get hacked to play back up games, which is what obviously everybody with the pirate eye patch is looking forward to, it is guaranteed that the hack would have a hard time reaching the general public for quite sometime. Why? Price! The PS3 uses a Blu-Ray drive, and of course Blu-Ray disc, I’m not sure how many people have actually been to their local Best Buy or even visited Newegg lately, a good burner is still in the $200 range, while the disc may not be as bad, you still pay in average 10-$20 per disc. Now come the compatibility issues, what burner will work, what discs are the best, what additional hardware and software to buy, and so on and so forth.

Yes, the great Geo has exploited something that many have tried to exploit, but we have to be realist, Geo may have the knowledge to make this happen all the way through, but there are reasons, in why Geo is stepping back; the reasons could very well be time and money. While a few may afford the time and the ingredients to continue where Geo left off, most will only read, watch, and hear about the PS3’s hacking stages much like all hacked consoles have gone through before. For the time being, don’t get too exited just yet, let the brains take care of the grunt work, let them go through the trial and error phase, let them make it easy.

Spend the next few years enjoying the PSN, while we still can.

Wow, Onlive team, must be loving life right now.lol!

The Jetsons was a hell of a show! But even the Jetsons didn’t have high definition support for their Skype calls. The latest Skype BETA 4.2 supports High Definition video at 720p (1280×720) at 30fps. In conjunction with this great new update, there are a couple of companies Skype has collaborated with to offer self video encoding and processing onboard webcams. Meaning, no need to have a speedy PC to support the HD video. All the HD encoding is done inside that little circle of glass. The webcams are from faceVision and In Store. The cams range from $70-$140 respectively.

Along with this space age Skype update, Skype also partner up with LG and Panasonic to bring Skype HD-enabled TVs. The TV’s will come with all the features the PC and Mac app offers, plus a 720p webcam, and microphone designed to pick up even the quietest farts.

I’ll talk to you guys later, calling my Abuelita through Skype HD. aka “Jetsons HD”.

Good looking out Litigator!

While Redtube is already readily available via the PS3’s browser. Digital Media Mart (DMM) has made a Blu-Ray disc call DM.TV available with a viewing app for downloading and streaming high definition, redtube status, movies. The crazy thing about it, is that this disc, and app are only able to play on one Blu-Ray player…PS3 baby! I know what the TQfam is thinking…BMI!! But check this out, the company DMM is actually offering free DMM.TV disc in order to promote its service. They are even covering shipping cost. The word on the streets, is that only Japan based peeps can request, but we need to give this one a try. This is an official BMI alert! Get em!

Here is their site: the DMM.TV official site.

It is the 8th round of the heavy weight HD battle, and the heavy favorite Blu-Ray is on the ropes and in trouble. On the other side, DLC is quickly and convincingly wearing out Blu-Ray. Yes, Blu-Ray has won a huge battle against HD-DVD in the past, but it is starting to almost look embarrassing on how DLC is toying with the competition. It was just last week on TQcast Episode 71, that the hosts talked about how easy it was to damage a Blu-Ray, and how many people are receiving damaged Blu-Rays from internet renting services. Today as one of the host from TQcast received their weekly movie from Netflix, the prove and odds were revelead. Many Netflix subscribers have complained that they have received up to 4 out of 5 damaged Blu-Ray discs and after repeated phone calls to Netflix all they can really do is offer a discount and or send a replacement. What is the future of Blu-Ray? As TQcast mentioned on their last show, Blu-Ray is on the ropes. Why put up with cracked discs that won’t let you play your favorite high definition movie or maybe even your favorite PS3 game, when you can just go online and download it with no issues. This is something that has been proved already by mp3’s; more people have downloaded music rather than buying the physical media. Downloadable content is easier to access and free of headaches. As more and more media goes online, it’s making itself clear that our movies, video games, music and books will be physically untouchable soon enough.

Microsoft and Apple’s worst nightmare came true as several sources have confirmed that Google will be launching a cloud-based operating system sometime in the latter half of 2010.

The operating system will be a lightweight, virus free experience apparently run through possibly the Chrome browser which will allow all of Google’s current online tools like G-mail, Google Reader, Google Maps, and the Google Calender to be integrated into the experience.

This new Chrome OS, while similar in functionality to their Android OS on phones and netbooks, will be capable of working on Windows, Apple, and Linux computers using compatible widgets.

Perhaps it might even be possible to install this OS on your PS3. Imagine having all of your Google tools readily available if needed on your gaming console. This type of cloud-computing could completely change the way you game and even force Sony , Apple, and Microsoft to work more expediently on their own respective cloud services for their products.

It was just a matter of time before somebody came up with a tethering solution for both the iPhone 3G and 3Gs. Simply follow the steps below.

Here’s an extremely easy way to enable tethering on your iPhone 3G and 3GS (even on AT&T!) by just visiting a site on your iPhone’s Safari. No jailbreaking needed. Here’s where you go:

http://help.benm.at/help.php

Then scroll down to the Tethering & Internet Settings, then choosing your country and provider. This works for both AT&T and T-Mobile, and will let you install the appropriate configuration.

Now go to your settings and enable tethering. Check the video walkthrough above to help you configure tethering.

The source claims that they have been testing this for about a day and it’s been working quite well. Just be careful though, that AT&T doesn’t officially sponsor this and might charge you extra for using tethering while you’re not supposed to. Monitor your bill and charges.

If this procedure disables visual voicemail on your phone, just go and reset your network settings, and it should be fixed. If that doesn’t work, try updating your phone with an older version of the AT&T carrier settings.

Check out the video below:
