Welcome to another installment of the Indie Game Showcase. If you are unfamiliar with what’s going on here, please refer to previous articles for more information. Today we are going to take a look at Power Up, a very enjoyable side scroller shooter title form Psychotic PSoftware. Despite being familiar, this is still an explosive good time to say the least. Let’s take some time now to go over everything the game has to offer, shall we?
Earth is under attack, and the only thing standing between itself and ultimate destruction is the ship that goes by the name of Weapon-F. You have now become the last line of defense in an ongoing war that just isn’t going to stop. The mission here is simple, take out those who dare oppose your planet, and show them who’s boss in the only way you know how to, by destroying them. Sounds pretty straightforward for the most part right, well, while that statement may be true, trust me, the level of challenge here is legendary to say the least.
My favorite aspect of this game by far is how fast paced, challenging, and varied the overall gameplay is. Every level presents a new type of enemy for you to figure out how to destroy, but luckily the ship is equipped with a number of different weapons to help the player figure out the solutions to these problems. Are enemies coming from the opposite side of the screen, or the bottom, or even from the top, don’t worry, there is a gun for all of them, and even some more for those special occasions as well. Combine that with some beautiful environments, and a quirky sense of humor, and you have the makings of a solid adventure that anybody can enjoy.
Honestly, the only real problem that I could see anyone having here is the fact that there is no checkpoint system. You have a set of lives, and once those are gone, that’s it, back to the start all over again. It’s an arcade mode style that may not appeal to people who are not looking to complete the game in one sitting. Despite this minor issue, for the low price of just $1.00, Power Up is still worth checking out, download it now.
