Monday Savings For The Everyday Gamer: Volume 10

Welcome to another installment of Monday Savings For The Everyday Gamer. If you are unsure about what’s going on here, please refer to previous articles for more information. Today we are going to venture on over to the world of mobile gaming to take a look at something that relates to one of my favorite franchises of all time, TMNT. Let’s move on to find out exactly what I’m talking about, shall we?

The tenth title in our collection is a $1.99 digital download for apple and android devices that goes by the name of Usagi Yojimbo: Way of the Ronin. You take control of everyone’s favorite ninja rabbit, and it’s your job to guide him through a series of levels, while mauling down as many enemies as possible in the process. Be careful though, because enemy types will change constantly, leaving it up to the player to figure out how to survive. Sounds simple right? Well, you are right, this is a basic 2D hack and slash adventure that doesn’t offer much in the way of variety, but is still a whole lot of fun to play despite that fact anyways.

Let’s get the bad stuff out of the way first. My biggest issue with this game as a whole is with it’s frame rate, which can become sluggish when a large amount of enemies are on screen. Another problem I can think of is that the difficulty level is non existent, meaning that you can basically complete every level with just one attack. This is caused by the large amount of hearts dropped by enemies in every stage. Not that they aren’t helpful or anything, just wish they were spread out more in order makes the levels just a little bit more challenging to complete. Other than these issues, which are minor at best,my experience with this one was fun for the most part.

Now let’s take a moment to try to end things on a good note. The touch controls were pretty easy to understand, and only required a couple of different button presses to execute the more powerful moves to take out large groups of enemies. As far as gameplay goes, despite becoming redundant after awhile,  each level is still very fun to play. Presentation wise, the level designs were beautiful look at, and the overall sense of humor in the cutscenes was a refreshing thing to see as well. Finally, for a low price of only $2, fans of the turtles like me, or fans of the comics can enjoy a full fledged adventure that does each series justice.

If you are interested in unleashing some katana induced rage on some unsuspecting bad guys, look no further, Usagi Yojimbo: Way of the Ronin is just what the doctor ordered, download it now.
