Welcome to the second installment of my multi part series on first impressions of games for Nintendo’s new system, the Wii U. The title that we are going to talk about today is the next installment of 2D Mario games entitled New Super Mario Bros. U. Now while there may not be a whole lot of differences between this and just about every other side scrolling adventure our beloved plumber has taken part in, there is still enough on offer here to make the experience well worth the price of admission. Let’s take at how much fun I’ve had with the game so far.
On the surface everything here plays and looks exactly like the previous entry in the series, New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The controls are solid, each level is filled with obstacles to keep players on their toes at all times, and there are plenty of powerups at a players disposal to make traversing through each level that much easier. Where things change here is the addition of the gamepad controller, which can allow a second player to add platforms to help their friend reach secret items, gain advantages during boss fights, and so on. The new mechanic puts a whole new spin on cooperative play, and encourages people to work together in order to make the most out of each situation.
Overall, my experience with New Super Mario Bros. U up to this point has been nothing short of awesome. I cannot wait to complete it, in fact, I’m going to finish a few more levels right now, see you later.
