Flashback Fridays: Cool Boarders 2 (Sony Playstation)

Hello everybody, welcome to another installment of Flashback Fridays. For those of you who are unfamiliar with what’s going on here, please refer to previous articles for more information. Today we are going to talk about an activity that is much safer to partake in a digital format than in real life, snowboarding. The title that I’m going to discuss with you perfectly explains why this statement is true in more ways than one, Cool Boarders 2 for Playstation.

Back in 1997, I was looking for something fun to play in between sessions of Final Fantasy VII. While Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 did provide some thrills for me and my friends, there was another enjoyable experience that provided the same amount of enjoyment in a different way, and it was called Cool Boarders 2. As soon as I put the disc into my Playstation for the first time, I realized that this something truly special in it’s own right. Apparently racing through a mountain of snow then crashing into a tree just before hitting the finish line never got old, who knew?

The concept here is pretty simple to understand for the most part. You race against other people down a hill on a board, and try to make it towards the finish line first in order to win the race, all while performing tricks to beat the high scores of other players as well. Gameplay centers around this idea, so going into further detail would be kind of pointless here. Sounds easy right? Well, for the most part it is, but there a few surprises thrown in here and there to keep even the most experienced players on their toes at all times, which will definitely provide an overwhelming feeling of frustration, but also a immense feeling of accomplishment for anybody who takes the time to get things right.

So what are my thoughts on the game? Well, it’s a classic sports experience that is incredibly fun to play with friends. The overall visual design is colorful and full of life, the controls were easy to understand for the most part, and the sound effects were goofy, but packed a punch to them that would even make the most fearless individual jump out of their seat more than once. Toss in delightful music, along with a slew of different gameplay modes, and you have the makings of something truly special.

What stands out the most to me about this game was what my friend and I used to do during the title sequence. As soon as the first screen pops ups, an announcer comes on and says very slowly the phrase “Cool Boarders”.  Right after you hit the start button to access the main menu  he says “Here We Go”.  To have some fun with the ridiculous introduction, we used to hit start in the middle of Cool Boarders, which came out sounding something like this “Cooool, Here We Go”.  I know it sounds stupid, but to the two of us it was the funniest thing ever, either way, give me a break, I was just a kid.

Cool Boarders 2 is still one of my favorite sports ever made to this very day, and is definitely something any thrill seeker will definitely want to consider checking out.

That concludes my story on Cool Boarders 2  for the Playstation, but if you have any fond (or bad) memories of this game please feel free to share them with us in the comments below.

Here is a gameplay video that I found for it, enjoy!
