Flashback Fridays: Legend of Legaia

Legend of Legaia TQ

Hello everybody, welcome to another installment of Flashback Fridays. For those of you who are unfamiliar with what’s going on here, please refer to previous articles for more information. Today we are going to take a look at something that turned an interesting idea into a worthwhile experience. The title that I am talking about was a very unique RPG for the Sony Playstation, Legend of Legaia.

After finishing up Final Fantasy VII for what seemed to be like the 100th time back in the late 90’s, I was itching to find another RPG to play that could measure up in the same way as that game did. My journey proved to be rather worthless for a while though because almost nothing came out for a couple years that could even come close to filling the void at all. Then something amazing happened, a new game released for the Sony Playstation in the spring of 1999 called Legend of Legaia. It was this weird mix of an RPG and 2D Brawler that seemed like a doomed concept right off the bat. Not knowing what to expect I decided to give this game a shot, and needless to say, what happened next could only be described as something truly special.

The setup here is your basic good versus evil tale, which in all honesty works out in a good way that leaves players open to interpret the story anyway they want to. Welcome to Legaia, a once peaceful world populated by happy people and mystical objects called Seru. For years they have lived in peace together, until today, when an evil mist corrupted their world and ended up turning the Seru into monsters. In an effort to save their world from disaster, a group of heroes (Vahn, Noa, and Gala) set out on a journey to revive all of the genesis trees in hopes that doing this will make things right once again. Gameplay centers around defeating enemies using a unique command input fighting system similiar to 2D fighting games. Sounds weird right? Well it is, but after the first few battles, you’ll realize that playing any other way would just be ridiculous.

So what are my personal thoughts on the game? I think it’s a fantastic adventure that takes a unique idea an implements it in a fun and creative way to appeal to gamers of all ages. Every single aspect of the title, from the memorable music, to the creative battle system, to the relationships between each of the characters, is all done with such finesse and flare that you tend to forget what your fighting for sometimes and just end up indulging yourself in this fantastic and beautiful world instead. Toss in some memorable boss fights, and this ends up being a fantastic experience that you will never forget.

Legend of Legaia showed me that even the craziest concepts, when done right, can make any game enjoyable, and is definitely something RPG fans looking for something a little bit different should definitely consider checking out.

That concludes my story on Legend of Legaia, but if you have any fond memories of this game please feel free to share them with us in the comments below.

Here is a gameplay video that I found for it, enjoy!
