Welcome to another installment of the blast from the past series that we like to call Flashback Fridays. For those of you who are unfamiliar with what’s going on here, please refer to previous articles for more information. Today we are going to take a look at an addictive sports experience which took the video game world by storm. The title that I am referring to is one of the most fun basketball games ever made, NBA Jam for the SNES.
Ya I know, just about every story I write about comes from the early 90’s, but hey, it was my childhood, so deal with it. Now while 1993 gave way to one of the best RPG’s ever made (Secret of Mana), another exciting game debuted that year as well, and it goes by the name of NBA Jam. This was a unique take on the sports genre in which being serious about anything was completely out of the question. As soon as my friend finished playing through our first matchup we were instantly hooked, and have been fans of the series ever since.
Now on the surface it may look like a traditional basketball game is taking place, but in all honesty, this theory couldn’t be further from the truth. Basically this is a no holds barred grudge match to the death where just about anything goes and then some. Want to fly to the ceiling, and then come all the way back down for a dunk, you can do that. Feel like putting an opponent flat on their back in order to get the ball, no problem. Up for shooting from one end of the court to the other, and actually making it, look no further, your prayers have been answered.
My personal thoughts on this game can be summed up in one word, crazy. Where else can you catch a ball on fire, destroy a backboard, and hear an announcer try to sound more cool than he really is, nowhere. The gameplay was intense and satisfying, the music was as upbeat and lively as ever for the time, and every matchup offered a new set of challenges that kept me on my toes at all times. Every single one of these elements combined together made for a incredibly enjoyable sports title that is as fun to play today as it was back then.
NBA Jam reminded everybody that playing sports related video games are about one thing and one thing only, having a good time, enough said.
That concludes my story on NBA Jam, but if you have any fond memories of this game please feel free to share them with us in the comments below.
Here is a gameplay video that I found for it, enjoy!
