Flashback Fridays: The Simpsons Arcade Game

Hello everybody, welcome to another installment of Flashback Fridays. For those of you who are unfamiliar with what’s going on here, please refer to previous articles for more information. Today we are going to take a look at something that made sure that all of my allowance money went towards an arcade machine as a kid. The title that I am referring to is one of the better beat em ups of the early 90’s, The Simpsons Arcade Game.

This is about as straightforward as games get. Seriously, take the idea for the original Ninja Turtles arcade, substitute the simpsons for those beloved reptiles, and you get this title. Was the idea original? Of course not, but oh boy was the game a whole lot of fun to play. Here’s the deal,  Maggie has been captured by Smithers after a piece of jewelry becomes stuck in her mouth during a robbery, and now it’s up to the family to try and save her. How do they do that you ask? Well, by beating everybody up in town of course. Each character had a specific set of talents that benefit them during battle. Bart could take out a group of enemies with a spin attack, Homer was very powerful, Marge and Lisa had great range attacks, and so on. Team attacks could help out from time to time as well, but they were there more for show than anything else.

My favorite part about the game was playing it with a group of people. Every single time I went to the arcade, there was a large group of kids playing together, and sometimes, they would even invite me to join in on the action. Too bad this was always cut short due to the fact that most of us did not have a lot of money in those days, so once we were all out of money, the fun was over. Thankfully, the downloadable gods have answered my prayers, and have decided to make the full game available on Xbox Live. So basically, for a one time fee of ten dollars, I can enjoy this title as much as possible for many years to come.

The Simpsons Arcade Game is a piece of gaming history that still stands the test of time to this very day, and anybody who is up for some old fashioned fun would be a fool not to check it out.

That concludes my story on The Simpsons Arcade Game, but if you have any fond memories of this game please feel free to share them with us in the comments below.
