Did Sony Silently Help Vita’s Launch Sales?

Vita-Sales-TQ650

I find it very hard to believe that after PlayStation Vita’s strong first week sales  its second week drastically dropped nearly 80%. This could either mean that people lost interest in just one week, or Sony silently helped the launch by buying their own product.

The PlayStation Vita sold 324,000+ units in its first week, while its second week only sold 72,000. Heck, the original PSP outsold the Vita by selling 101,000 on the same week. What’s going on with these numbers? It’s no wonder why many sites and blogs are losing faith in Sony’s next big thing;  however, before you get discouraged in picking up your Vita this coming February, remember that these numbers are only for Japan. For example, the 3DS’ North American launch was much more successful than Japan’s launch in terms of sales. So, it’s going to be interesting to see North American launch numbers.

I hate to compare this to music, but I’m going to do it anyway. Many artists tend to buy their own records to help market and give people the impression that it’s a must have album. I’m not saying that Sony has done this, but it does leave a question as to why the sale numbers dropped so much in just one week. And let’s face it the Vita was not entering the current gaming generation with the biggest and greatest expectations, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony dropped a couple million to hype up the Vita, instead of loosing it due to the lack of sales.

Let’s wait and see what February tells us about PlayStation Vita’s North American consumer demand. I’m just a concerned consumer because I want it and I hope it does well, but I would hate to find the PS Vita months later, for much less, as we have seen with other handhelds.
