After changing the pricing plans on their subscribers recently, the once loved entity known as Netflix has just recently made an announcement that may either piss more people off than they already have, or it may end up being a wise decision that could benefit their company in the long run. The company has announced that it’s DVD by mail service will now become a separate entity called Qwikster. It will still operate the same way as before, but with one new addition, the ability to rent video games for the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii. This feature sounds cool and all, but there’s a catch, users will have to pay an additional fee, similar to what Netflix did with their Blu-ray rentals, if people decide to rent games from the service.
No other details, as to when this change will occur, have been revealed at this time, other than a simple “launching soon” message on the new companies website. I personally cancelled my subscription (well it was a shared one anyway) after the price increase, and believe me, this announcement does not make me want to come back anytime soon. Higher price is one thing, but splitting services up will without a doubt confuse users even more so than before. People want a simple setup (at least I think they do) that is organized and easy to access, not a jumbled up mess, where going from one site to another could end up being a frustrating thing to do.
