The DotA inspired Heroes of Newerth has finally gone free-to-play! While this was a smart move on their part, it leaves us people who paid for the game feel a little shitty, or does it?

Following the recent wave of games that have gone free-to-play, Heroes of Newerth is now free-to-play. Previously, players had to fork out $34.99 for a Heroes of Newerth account. League of Legends on the other hand, which is very similar in gameplay style to Heroes of Newerth, has been free-to-play since the day it was released. What does this have to do with anything? Well for starters, League of Legends is almost 5x bigger than Heroes of Newerth, in both registered users and in sales profits. Even if you were an early adopter of Heroes of Newerth and paid full price for the game, you are in for a surprise. The basic account is free for new players. Once a player has played for a certain amount of time, their account will be upgraded to a “Verified Account”. Verified accounts allows players to play in ranked matches with non noob players. Players who were already paid users will have Legacy accounts. Legacy accounts will get a lifetime of free access to all Heroes of Newerth heroes, and are able to play in Verified Only games, to ensure that you don’t get stuck with a noob. Sorry to say, Legacy accounts can no longer be purchased.
