Nintendo is known to get around all rules when it comes to their physical media — and after learning that Nintendo will slap a proprietary Disc drive on the Wii U, it’s no surprise that the console will not support DVD movie playback. I think it’s safe to say that Nintendo doesn’t give a damn about DVD or Blu-Ray — it’s all about digital media when it comes to movies for Nintendo.
President Satoru Iwata told investors after E3:
“The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.”
Nintendo will be using a proprietary 25GB disc format for the Wii U.
