Product: Monster Tron Light Disk Audio Dock
Manufacturer: Monster Cable
Review By: Illmatic
Monster Cable and Disney have teamed up to bring us one of the best looking audio docks on the market. Fusing Monster Cable technology with the smooth, futuristic styling of Tron: Legacy, you get an audio dock that is both very stylish with awesome sound quality that matches.
The Tron Light Disk Audio Dock is a Tron inspired iPod/iPhone dock from Monster Cable. Monster Cable is known for producing high quality cables for all of our electronic components. Most, if not all of the audio/video cables that I personally use are by Monster Cable. Monster Cable has also released some of the most pristine headphones known to man, the Beats By Dre headphones. With the Beats By Dre headphones, Monster Cable has proved itself worthy in the audio category. With that being said, it was only right for them to release this Tron audio dock.
Whats In The Box?: Upon opening the package, which by the way is covered with awesome Tron artwork, we are greeted with a Monster Cable/Tron marketing cardboard display. Inside the box you will find all sorts of iPod and iPhone dock connectors, instruction manuals, power adapter extensions, a small remote control, and of course..The Tron Light Disk Audio Dock.
How’s The Build Quality?: When I first took the dock out of the box, I thought, WHOA!!! This dock just screams quality. Monster Cable put a lot of thought and creativity when they created this audio dock. The unit feels very sturdy and has some good weight to it. Usually the audio docks that I have come across are lacking weight and they feel very poorly built.
How’s The Functionality?: The Tron Light Disk Audio Dock is a dock that amplifies the music coming from your iPhone/iPod. There is no option for AM/FM radio, which was a big thing for me. Everyday I start my morning with the sounds of good talk radio. I was really looking forward to hearing my favorite radio show with the Tron Light Disk Audio Dock, but I was sadly disappointed when I found out that this could not be done. One of the things Im glad that this dock does is charge my iPhone. Not only does it pump out my tunes, but it keeps my phone energized with all the juice needed to carry me throughout my day.
How’s The Sound?: In short, the Tron Light Disk Audio Dock pumps out amazing sound. I was very skeptical when I plugged in my iPhone for the first time. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this beautiful device. Sure, the Beats By Dre produce awesome sound, but how would this stack up to it? Upon my first listening, I was quite pleased. All of the components for great sound were there. The bass is deep, the treble was clear, and the default levels were adjusted perfectly. I listened to a variety of music during my time with the device. Hip Hop and Techno sounded truly amazing with this device.
What About The Tron App?: The Tron Light Disk Audio Dock has an accompanying Tron App that goes very well with it. The App can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store, and I highly recommend getting it if you own this Audio Dock. The App allows for a few features that can only be used when the App is open and connected to the dock. The App has an option so that you can set-up up to 6 different alarms. When the alarm goes off, your are awaken by the sounds of your own music and with a light effects show, courtesy of Monster Cable and Disney. Another cool feature that the App has is an option called “The Visualizer”. This feature allows the Light Disk to put on a light show to the sounds of your music. While the lights don’t sync with your music, it still looks really cool, especially when the lights are off. The App also allows you to configure the EQ settings to your personal liking. Lastly, the Tron App has a built in game that is, at best, mildly entertaining.
Wishes: I really wish that this included an option to listen to FM radio. Even the cheapest of cheap audio docks have this feature. Another thing I would change is the ease of use with the Tron App. The App itself is not very user friendly and can be very frustrating at times. $350? Really? This seems like a lot of cash for an iPhone/iPod dock, especially when it doesn’t play any FM radio.
TQ Bottom Line: If you are a fan of TRON, then this is a must buy for you. The sound quality is excellent and you will not be disappointed. Even if you are not a fan of TRON, you might still want to consider picking this up. The light effects and deep, rich sound should be enough to warrant a purchase.
Final Score: 4.5 out of 5 Michelas!
