Bust A Move Universe 3DS Review

Game: Bust A Move Universe
Genre: Puzzle
Platform: Nintendo 3DS
Review By: Illmatic

Most, if not all of us gamers have at some point played a Bust A Move game. You know, the game where you control those cute little dinosaurs as you try to eliminate all of the colored balloons from the screen. As many of us have played Bust A Move before, Im pretty nobody has played it in 3D, thats right 3D! Bust A Move Universe brings new life to the series with 3D and a new story mode. Think its a gimmick, find out here.

Story/Gameplay: In the latest offering from the series, Bust A Move Universe introduces a unique story mode, sort of. You’re not going to find a truly engrossing story here, not at all actually. Instead, we find out that our Dino friends have been kidnapped and taken to various Worlds in the Bust A Move universe. With that being said, it is your job to rescue them from the scum that kidnapped them in the first place. Bust A Move Universe plays exactly as you would expect it. You aim your bubble shooter at other bubbles to eliminate them. This sounds rather tedious and used up, but there are some special bubbles that spice things up a bit. The inclusion of the special bubbles is a welcomed addition to the series. These special bubbles can do all sorts of things such as; eliminate a huge group of bubbles, change the color of multiple bubbles, and even allow you to shoot a single special bubble to get rid of a certain bubble group. This may sound confusing, but it is a lot easier to understand once you play it. There are also bosses in Bust A Move Universe! Thats right, BOSSES. How did they include bosses you might ask? Its really quite simple actually. The bosses fly across the top of the screen and you have to shoot bombs at the boss. The bombs have to be in clusters of 3 in order for them to explode. As you get towards the end of the game, you have to match certain types of bombs in order for them to explode. The inclusion of these bosses is a nice addition to an amazing franchise.

Graphics: The graphics in Bust A Move Universe are not the greatest that I have seen on a DS. Keep in mind that this is a launch game, and like most launch games, the graphics are usually not utilizing the console to its full potential. On the other side of the coin, the graphics are not horrible and they do fit well for this type of game.

3D: The 3D effects in Bust A Move Universe are actually surprisingly well done. I wasn’t sure how this type of game would utilize 3D, but it managed to use it in a way that is not gimmicky and in a way that does not feel like it was just thrown in. Basically, the game board and all of the bubble on it are in 3D. Its not mind blowing 3D, but it does work.

Sound: The music in Bust A Move Universe is unique in a way. It is essentially the same song remixed in different ways. Now this may sound like the easy way out of creating original songs, but the remixes are actually quite good. To be honest, the music in every Bust A Move title has always been great and catchy. The sound effects are the same sound effects that we have heard before, which isn’t a bad thing. If it aint broke, don’t fix it, right.

Controls: The controls in Bust A Mover Universe are exactly how you would expect them to be. You control the aiming arrow with the thumbstick or D-PAD, and you fire your bubbles with the X button. The shoulder buttons can be used to make precision movements. This comes in handy when you need that one shot to be perfect.

Wishes: I really wish there was more game modes here. The main story is incredibly short. It took me a whopping 2 hours to complete the main puzzle mode. I also think they should have implemented an online feature. This could be like a VS feature, in which you battle people to see who can complete the puzzle faster. This would definitely add more replay value to the game.

TQ Bottom Line: If you are a fan of Bust A Move, this title may be worth your time, however the lack of features may bore you very fast. If you are a newcomer , this title is a great way to be introduced to the Bust A Move universe.

Final Score: 4 out of 5 Michelas!
