Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock Review

Game: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock
Genre: Music, Rhythm
System: PlayStation 3
Review by: Illmatic

There was a time when the music genre in video games was taking over everything. Over the years we’ve seen a lot of music rhythm games, with titles such as Dance Dance Revoultion, Beat Mania, Guitar Hero and Rock Band to name a few. Of all of the music rhythm games weve seen only a few have succeeded and Guitar Hero is one of them. Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is the sixth main game in the Guitar Hero franchise. Have we seen enough music rhythm games, or does Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock match the quality of its predecessors?

Story/Gameplay: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is the first in the series to really take the story of the game seriously. While the story isn’t a Hollywood quality script, it is entertaining and in a way, unique. In Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock your main goal is to turn each character from the previous games into his/her warrior form and defeat the Rock Gods. I must admit that the warrior versions of each character look pretty cool. Each character has his/her own special bonuses, such as score multipliers and star power boosters. The gameplay has not changed much, which is great news for fans of the series.

Graphics: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is one of the best looking Guitar Hero games. The character models are well done and look very sharp. The colors are very vibrant and really stand out. Other than these graphical improvements its still the same Guitar Hero look that we have all known to love.

Sound: The music and sound effects in a game like Guitar Hero are very crucial. Luckily this title doesn’t fall short in this category. The game is narrated by legendary KISS bassist, Gene Simmons. This was a surprise and quite a treat for me since I am a big KISS fan. The soundtrack in Warriors of Rock is strong, leaning more towards older classic rock tracks. Younger fans of the Guitar Hero series might have mixed feelings regarding the soundtrack if they have not been exposed to these older tracks.

Controls: For this portion of the review I want to focus on the controller that comes bundled with Guitar Hero: Wariors of Rock. The guitar is one of the best packaged guitars that has come with Guitar Hero, probably the best! The controller is sturdy, and is really responsive. It comes with a USB dongle that can be stored inside the neck of the guitar when not in use. The best feature of this new controller is the ability to remove the wings from the body. You can purchase many types of wings to truly personalize it to your liking.

Wishes: There isn’t much to want in Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. My only gripe is the lack of online matchmaking. There was many times when I wanted to just go online and play a song with someone. The soundtrack is good but is still missing a song Guitar Hero fans have been wanting…Stairway to Heaven.

Final Thoughts: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is another solid release in the series. The graphical improvements and the classic rock tracks make this title a stellar experience. The bundled guitar makes this the Guitar Hero package to purchase. Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock earns a solid 4 Michelas out of 5.
