PS3 Video Game Awards Without Uncharted 2

Uncharted 2 won many awards in 2009, including the much deserved award of all awards “Game of the Year” award. But what if Uncharted 2 didn’t come out in 2009? Would the 2009 Video Game of the Year Award be remembered as the toughest award to decide for? We all know that Uncharted 2 completely dominated 2009, and let’s face it, every great game released in 2009 was completely over shadowed by Uncharted 2; and of course MW2 sales. This had to be the year, of the most sleeper titles thanks to those two titles. But 2009 was indeed packed with amazing GOTY contenders. In fact, 2009 would have been a crazy year without Uncharted 2. The following 2009 PS3 games picked by TQ staff have all the elements to be considered for,”Game of the Year”.

Killzone 2

Killzone 2, had been in production for years, with the developers teasing us with snippets and screenshots of the ever evolving ingame engine that many said, would not be possible since those days of winning E3’s best of show. A few years passed and Guerrilla Games have not disappointed the fans. Hosting some of the smoothest FPS graphics of the year to its astonishing cover system that FPS fans have been so waiting for, lush 32p online play, Sixaxis featured controls and a single player mode that holds itself against this year’s best. This game was a winner of E3 many years ago and it’s now my pick for GOTY if Uncharted 2 was non-existing.

Shatter

Each level in Shatter has a boss battle that is unique to itself so you won’t get bored of the same repetitive boss. The levels themselves are different, and you can be in an oval type of world, or control your ship from the left or bottom of your screen. Also, if I had to give an original/best soundtrack for a video game as well, I would give it to Shatter, it features music that is techno/instrumental, with great guitar rifts. You can check out the music at http://sidhe.bandcamp.com/ Leader boards can be very addicting if you are the type that can’t stand to be at the bottom of the list when you match up against your PSN friends. I still hold the number one spot. I welcome all challengers. PSN ID: Denoch.

inFamous

inFamous

This PS3 exclusive by Sucker Punch Productions brought new elements to the open world genre. Not only did the game offer some unique abilities (gliding, a tweaked climbing system, rail grinding, etc), but they packed it all into a comic book type of world with a lavish style of telling the story of Cole as he tried to make sense of what was going on around him.

More open world games should take note of Infamous and try to incorporate its mechanics into future titles.

Little Big Planet (Game of the Year Edition)

It’s in the title, “GAME OF THE YEAR EDITION”. With an additional $30 worth of included downloadable content, Little Big Planet is the perfect game for everybody. Whether you want to spend some time with your girl and get her into gaming, or if you want to spend some time with your kids or friends online, this game is suitable for everyone and it is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Media Molecule definitely hit the jackpot when they created this whole “Play, Create, and Share” project and it also started something other developers can learn from. Heck, LBP should be PS3 game of the Year every year!

MLB 09 The Show

MLB 09 is the best Baseball game since MVP 05. The Show mode is the closest thing to being a major leaguer. All the little things, such as player movements, fans in the stands, play by play and facial details make MLB The Show, not only the best PS3 sports game, but the best Baseball game ever made. A serious Game of the Year Contender.

God of War Collection

Remastering is usually heard around the movie and music industry. But when Sony announced that they would release the PlayStation 2 titles, God of War and God of War 2 on one Blu-Ray and remastered at 720p, remastering became something all gamers wished Sony would do for many other great classic titles.

GOW and GOW2 both came out late in the PlayStation 2’s life cycle; therefore many gamers missed out on two of the greatest games ever made. Having never played GOW or GOW2 during the PS2 days, God of War Collection for the PlayStation 3 lived up to the hype, and helped me understand why so many gamers praised it at such high levels.

God of War Collection is easily my PS3 Game of the Year, if Uncharted 2 was lost in Shambhala.

What PS3 games do you see taking Uncharted 2’s spot in 09? Of course if Uncharted 2 was non-existing.

  • Kosamus

All great selections guys! Played and enjoyed every single one of the TQ choices.

  • Kristian_Bale

    inFamous or KZ2!

  • Great choices TQfam, although the only non-exclusive title that should have been here, would be WET. What a great game that was. WET was a great example of Poetry in motion.

Good TQshot to all TQstaff for this one!

  • CrashBandit

Demon’s Souls is a very hard game, I’m glad this was not on the list.

  • Aaron Colas

GOW collection? Come on, man. Killzone was allright, but lacked the generic massive appeal that most great fps have. Infamous was enjoyable; but certainly not an award winning masterpiece. Little Big Planet was a colossal triumph; but it came out in 2008, so no.

    K2 would win i think.

  • Torry

GOW collection is the winner. I too did not play the game during the PS2 days. And Collection is simply the best games I played this year.

Shatter is really good as well.

Surprised Demon’s Soul missed the list.

  • David Macphail

If we’re only counting PS3 exclusives then i’d say Infamous, Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time or Demon’s Souls. GOW Collection doesn’t really count because technically the games came out years ago.

However if Uncharted 2 never came out last year then i’d have to give GOTY 2009 to Assassin’s Creed 2.

    thank you.
FINALLY! some one gives inFAMOUS the respect and praise it deserves.
that, batman AA and assassins creed 2 are the best games of this year by far.
but how can you even consider killzone 2?
its boring, repetitive, predictable, your enemies are BULLET SPONGES.
i shoot a hig in the chest with a shotty at point blank range, he does not die, so i pull out my pistol because the shotty is empty, pop 2 pistol bullets AND HE STILL IS NOT DEAD!
    WTF?
    BULLET SPONGE!!!!!!!!!!!
O and the buggiest game I HAVE EVER PLAYED!
    yes buggier than mercenaries 2!
im replaying through the game now to get my plat and every 10 minutes the game is freezing for 10 seconds or so.
and the subtitles are lagging the audio.
    like ricco will say “ATAK!”
than the commander will say “alpha team, whats going on?”
than as the audio is playing that, the subtitles from ricco will come up.
than the subtitles of the commander will come up and the audio will be playing sev saying “ahhh, nows not the time SIR!”
    and so on.
for a game thats been in development for over 4 years it sure has allot of bugs, im constantly asking myself where is the polish?
they spent 4 years making this, what did they do in the 4 years?
there is so many bugs and gaping holes one would think its been in development for 1 year.

  • I beg to differ. After playing the demo of Infamous, I decided to pass on the experience. I was pretty much sick of the open world games such as Grand Theft Auto and Crackdown.

Killzone 2 deserves more credit than it deserved.

First, off…it was by far the most beautiful game made this year. If you want to argue that…go get some glasses and then check again.

We had AI and “bullet sponges” that actually responded to being shot.

    T

It had what in my opinion was one of the better storylines in a game period.

THE GAME FELT EPIC. Online…offline. Everything about it drew people to the game. There was plenty of hype surrounding the game and for the first time in a long time, a game actually delivered.

The game wasn’t perfect but in my experience, it was pretty close.

I’m sorry. It’s great that Infamous was good to you but you can’t compare a single player experience to a game that excelled both in single player and online.

When Infamous gets a multiplayer mode that makes me forget about Killzone, then it will become worthy of winning Game of the Year. Until then, it can settle for Story of the Year or Action Adventure Game of the Year.

The online structure is one of the most well built ever created and brought new aspects such as Squad Spawning into the limelight.

The level of detail placed in the single player game was impressive but have you ever stood still during a multiplayer match to watch the sand storm or perhaps the lightning during a rainstorm?

It also had what in my opinion was one of the better storylines in a game period.

    what storyline?
killzone 2 has no story line.
    why are you invading helgahn?
why do the higs wear those masks and the ISA dont need too?
why did the ISA kick the higs of vetka?
how did the petrosite grids turn up? is it a natural resorce or was it man made by the higs?
there is no storyline what so ever, there are gaping holes, and it raises more questions than answering.

and since when does a game need MP to be GOTY?
in that case heavy rain, GOW3, dantes inferno, alan wake cant get GOTY.
you missed out bigtime, the demo is NOTHING! like the game.
if you dont like open world games, well than its impossible to like infamous but how can you not like open world games?
ill take a open world game, over a linear, predictable, restrictive FPS or TPS any day!
