PS3 Firmware 3.10

You read it right TQFam, it appears the rumors that circulated the web last week were correct. Facebook integration has now been placed on the PS3 with the soon to come firmware 3.10. Here’s what the PlayStation Blog had to say:

Hi everyone, here’s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3’s built-in web browser.

This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates.

Additional highlights from update 3.10 include:

  • The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3.
  • The PSN Friends List has been modified based on feedback we received after update 3.00. Additionally, you can now choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB.
  • This update has no due date yet, it is said to be released “soon”, check out the video above for a preview!

Well, usually soon means by Midnight Newfoundland Time tonight.

I look forward to this addition. Once again they’ve outdone Microsoft on something incorporated into the their online service and once again, it doesn’t cost me a dime.

I don’t have to be a Gold member to access it. Seriously…they just keep making Microsoft look stupid for charging $50 for dedicated servers and cross game chat.

One more thing…while I enjoy using facebook, I’d prefer to post such updates via Twitter. Hopefully we’ll get the same integration as this Facebook one next firmware with Twitter.

    • I agree 100% percent with you Litigator. Just when Microsoft thinks it’s leading the way, Sony comes through and shuts them down! Even though I’m not a big fan of having Twitter and Facebook on consoles, I still think it’s a great idea for sony to provide this free feature to those who do want this. I don’t think I’ll be renewing my Xbox Live account any time soon. (Unless I get a super mo deal on it.)

Sweet, update 3.1 looks awesome, dont use Facebook but its a welcome feature, but photos looks heaps good and so does the friends list. PS3 is just doing everything right at the moment, keep it up Sony.

Boring!!!!!! Who needs facebook and twitter on their console. I want to play games and watch movies, not type and look at webpages. Its better on the computer anyway.

    • Does it post updates about movies you’re watching on your PS3? I think that would be cool.
